Thanks Neko. I have to admit, your avatar was what gave me the character. I'm still playing with the main plot line. Heres a little more :)
Maya had settled into a casual stride. At some point in her escape from the pack, she'd just decided to keep running, for no other reason than her own curiosity. She remembered virtually nothing except the forest, and it was time to see something new. As she moved, the scenery gradually changed from forest, to seemingly endless fields. Abruptly, there was a sharp slope and the grass ended. In a graceful jump, Maya landed on some form of stone she wasn't familiar with. She stood in its center, puzzled, then started pacing as she marveled at her new discovery. Behind her and in front, this strange stone stretched as far as she could see. Forward seemed as good a direction as any, and Maya broke into a run again, following a rather strange line which ran down the center of the stone. It really was an odd surface. While very cool and straight, it was rough on her feet. She had the distinct impression that something like this couldn't have happened randomly. It reminded her of all the straight lines in her dream. Maya ran for a long time, and eventually decided to stop under a solitary tree to get out of the sun. It had gotten much warmer, and the stone she ran on had become very hot. She could easily have just run parallel to it, but the hours of running had taken their toll. She wanted nothing more than a little water and some shade. The tree was a large oak, and blocked the sun well enough. One out of two wasn't bad. She came to a stop and just enjoyed the coolness for a moment. Her breathing slowed, as did the rhythmic thumping in her chest. Her muscles were grateful for the break as well. She relaxed the musculature in her back and chest so she could stand upright. Arms spread wide, Maya stretched, smiling to herself as the tendons in her hands loosened to give her fingers movement once more. She looked down at the pads on her hands and frowned. Perhaps running on such a surface wasn't the best idea. She looked up at a thick low hanging branch and grinned. She jumped, catching it with her claws and swung herself up. From here she could feel the breeze, which carried none of the heat of sun. She lay down on the branch, her head facing the direction she was traveling. She wondered what as over there, at the end of the strange stone with the line. She squinted, trying to see further into the distance and noticed that there was a strange haze on the horizon. Like a cloud, but not. Maya would wait for the evening. The sun was directly overhead, and she was glad for the rest. Her eyes fluttered for a moment, then shut. Her breathing evened and deepened, and before long, sleep found her.
Maya knew that she was dreaming, but this one, she didn't mind. She was in a familiar place, one that by the look of it should have been frightening, but wasn't. There were barriers, and beyond those were animals. She remembered that she loved coming here to see them. She often imagined that they were her friends. She would talk to them, but they never spoke back, and that was fine. She'd seen gorillas and a lion, but her favorite were the cheetah cubs that had only recently arrived. She loved watching them play. A boy and a girl, tumbling together in the enclosure, uncaring of the onlookers. She wanted nothing more than to play with them. The cubs' scuffle broke up, the girl was apparently tired of ruff housing and wanted a break. She laid down by the water and closed her eyes. The boy looked around, suddenly bored. His eyes locked with Maya's and she was sure she could see him smile, which only made her beam in happiness. He ambled toward her, and Maya did the same, trying to not move so fast that she might startle him. There were two fences (she mused for a moment at the word she'd remembered), spaced about a foot from each other. The cub on one side, and Maya on the other, both wanting nothing more than to be on the other. The cub reached his paw through the fence, and Maya did the same. For some reason the pink of her skin didn't frighten her today. She touched the fur on his paw and giggled. He cocked his head puzzled at the meaning of the noise. There was sudden yelling, and hands around her waist which pulled her away from her new friend, who looked at her with sad eyes. She struggled, but to no avail. Maya could feel herself waking, but fought it too, as if the hands were trying to drag her out of this pleasant dream. Naturally, it didn't work.
