The Bear of Many Talents

« on: January 20, 2010, 06:30:00 PM »

Hi.

This is not in the voting section because I don't think it can be properly discussed by simple choosing of an option. So, elaborate and elucidate at will, y'all.

I've noticed a trend in advertisements in some ot these chain and high-end restaurants that dinner steaks have been modified from a flat cut of meat of varying sizes to these dense little, unmarbelled, circular, two inch disks that a bear ... I mean... the customer...is supposed to be satisfied with paying siginificant money to enjoy.  Augmented with lots of buttered bread, too much salad and lumpy mashed potatoes that the restaurant believes is "Haute Cuisine" because they say it is.

O'course, I feel differently about my meat on a plate.
I have a copy of the movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance simply for the kitchen scene where they pan fry these 4 lb. slabs in pans as big as car tires and call them steaks. Served along with a quarl of baked beans and deep dish apple pie...for a dollar!
But, nowadays, even this bear would consider that extreme in the other direction.

Here's the debate topic:

If you're in a good, formal, dresses and suits restaurant and you order the steak dinner ranging from $30 - $50 U.S. (Or an equivalent amount in your land), what would you expect to see coming to your table?

A "hockey puck" on a saucer, stuffed in the middle with marinara ssuce or fake lobster meat?  bear_pinch

A thick, flat portion occupying up to 1/2 of your dinner plate? bear_happy

A foot-long sirloin roast, sliced like bread?  bear_shocked bear_unsure

Include choice of side dishes, if you wish.

For me, they'd be either a twice-baked potaoto or Steak Fries, and some hot steamed vegetable (carrots, corn, green beans, broccoli, peas with pearl onions and mushrooms on a smal pilaf of steamed white Jasmine rice.).

And a side dish of Fettucine Alfredo, seasoned with coarse black pepper!

Gotta have my 'Fredo!

I'm with Luna, on this one. That had better be one big plate, and have one big slab of barely-seen-fire meat on it. I'm thinking Big Texan style (the guys who do the 72oz steak - eat it all, it's free!), along with some good cornbread rolls, and a bigass Idaho baked potato dripping with cholesterol and everything a person could stuff it with.

Go to Texas Roadhouse. Every steak in there is 5 times the size of a human stomach.  f_blink

That's my point! That's 6 pounds!

I eat one of those things and my mate's paws woh't touch when he hugs me!

Does the fat on it count?   bear_unsure

What if there's a bone in it.
I gotta gnaw that clean?  bear_wassat

Is it just the meat or do they include the salad and sides with it?

O'course...
If the wolfy eats one of those, I wouldn't have to feed him for a week...
He'd probably lay in bed, or be in the bathroom, for two or three days, too.

*speaking low to myself*
Lots of bear chasing cuties in Texas.

 Hmmmm.

S'far as I remember, you just have to finish the steak. They come already trimmed, so not much fat to deal with.

Well then, FORGET IT! bear_getlost

I like a nice 50/50 balance between the "White" and the "red" parts of my sirloins.  bear_thumb

How else are you gonna keep it sizzling when it comes to your table?
