Weird. I've been seeing a HUGE rash of them over in World of Warcraft, too. In fact, many of them are spamming every zone on the server simultaneously. It's kind of scary, actually.

That has nothing to do with automated spambots coming to forums, registering accounts, and spamming ad links in posts. You're talking about adware/malware, which sends data from your computer to advertisers, and in turn causes pop-ups.

Big Zebby, have you tried something that generates a picture with numbers and letters on it that you have to enter when you register? I don't know what it's called, but it seems like a pretty effective defense because you actually have to look at the individual numbers and letters and enter them in to make an account.
Also, 900th post! :D

Also, 900th post! :D Congrats on the 900th post. though i hate to burst that bubble of an idea of yours, but there is ways around that. if you want to see what i mean, then Click Here to see that it's not that simple anymore to just use that type of protection. With stuff like this, it's extremely easy to bypass it.

IF you could change the code of the board to display a image with a text like this one:
Please insert into the box to the left/right a six, then a five, then an eight, and finally a zero.
I want to get a spambot that is intelligent to that point.

I was reading this topic through, and I saw someone say something about yiffy, actually, it should be a word with stuff on it to make it hard for the bot to figure it out.....a picture of a yiff is easy to figure out for bots .
